“Lent, my favourite time of the year.”

“Lent, my favourite time of year”, are the words of actor Mark Wahlberg, pictured  with his wife Rhea Durham, both proud of their ashes – Ash Wednesday being of course the start of Lent.

Lent comes from the Old English word for “spring” and is the forty-day period before Easter, excluding Sundays, which ends on Holy Saturday. It is a traditional doctrine of Christian spirituality to do some form of penance during this period, as a mark of our repentance, of turning away from sin and back to God.

Mr Wahlberg uses his time in Lent to reflect on his faith and his normal penance is to take some time off social media.
